Noah Baumwoll

Growing up in Greenwich Village and New York City provided Noah with tremendous inspiration. Nowhere else is there such variety and diversity of people living together. The Village has always been a magnet for artists and he was immersed in its flood of creative culture from the beginning. The artistic streets of the neighborhood pulsed with rhythm, energy, and life. This movement and energy is a key element in his work as well as vibrant color.

In addition to the strong influence of The City, Noah has been greatly influenced by the colors, culture, and music of Jamaica and the African Diaspora at large, as well as Eastern and Jewish spirituality. His work seeks to integrate these seemingly disparate themes into a cohesive whole. Trips to the Caribbean from an early age, as well as exposure to reggae music from his youth, helped fuel a lasting passion. More recently, yoga and eastern spiritual interests, culminating in a trip to India has energized his work. Red Grooms, Alexander Calder, and Jean-Michel Basquiat have served as examples in artistic achievement, as well as his mother Mary Ellis.

Noah’s work and skills were expanded and enhanced by attendance at LaGuardia High School of Music and Art, Ossining High School, and The University Of Wisconsin-Madison, where he received a BFA in Sculpture. It was at Ossining High School, under the guidance of an encouraging and supportive ceramics teacher, that he realized that sculpture was his destiny. He is happy to be showing his work in the town that helped shaped him.

Noah has worked in a number of different mediums including bronze, glass, neon and ceramics. Currently his emphasis is in steel. He says, “There is something essentially primal and basic about working with fire and metal. It is the immediacy of welding that I most enjoy, as well as the rough and rugged nature of the material.” The metal he uses is gathered from a variety of sources. The use of salvaged materials in his work allows him to resuscitate and breathe new life into discarded metal, giving the work a life and personality of its own.

He would like his art to be appreciated as a fusion of all means of artistic expression. For the work to be accessible to as many people as possible, and for it as well as himself to remain unpretentious, forthright, and bold.
